If you’re moving to Gran Canaria, getting your NIE is the single most important task you will face. Without it, you cannot open a bank account, buy a car, sign a long-term rental contract, receive a salary, or access many government services. It is not optional — it is the foundation of your life in Spain.

This guide covers exactly what the NIE is, where to apply in Gran Canaria (with specific office addresses and booking links), what documents you need, and the step-by-step process from start to finish — with the most up-to-date information for 2026.

QUICK SUMMARY: The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is your Spanish tax/ID number for foreigners. It is a permanent number and never changes. Getting it requires a cita previa (appointment) at a police station. In Gran Canaria, appointments fill up fast — book as soon as you can.

What Is the NIE — and Do You Need One?

NIE stands for Número de Identificación de Extranjero — your foreigner identification number in Spain. It is a unique number assigned to you for life, used for virtually all legal and financial activity in the country.

You will need your NIE to:

  • Open a Spanish bank account
  • Buy or rent property
  • Sign an employment contract or register as self-employed (autónomo)
  • Pay taxes or file a tax return
  • Register a vehicle or get a Spanish driving licence
  • Apply for public healthcare (tarjeta sanitaria)
  • Access many online government services

In short: if you are planning to live in Gran Canaria for more than 3 months, get your NIE appointment booked before you even arrive if possible.

Where to Apply for Your NIE in Gran Canaria

NIE applications are handled by the Policía Nacional (National Police). Importantly, the offices available to you depend on whether you are an EU or non-EU citizen — because the two procedures are different.

KEY DISTINCTION: EU/EEA/Swiss citizens book ‘Certificados y Asignación de NIE’ — a simpler process available at several local stations. Non-EU citizens book ‘Expedición de NIE e Inclusión de Huella’ — this involves fingerprinting and is only available at the main Extranjería offices.

For EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens — Multiple Offices Available

Because your process involves no fingerprinting, you can book at any Policía Nacional station on Gran Canaria that handles foreigners’ certificates. Three confirmed options are listed below — but always check the cita previa system as it shows all currently available offices and real-time slots.

Option 1 — Las Palmas: Brigada Provincial de Extranjería (main office, all nationalities)

Address Calle Luis Doreste Silva, 93
35004 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Transport Bus lines 1, 2, 12, 30 stop nearby. Limited street parking.
Hours Monday–Friday, 09:00–14:00 (appointment only)

Option 2 — Vecindario: Comisaría de Santa Lucía de Tirajana (east/south-east residents)

Useful for residents of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Vecindario, Ingenio, and the east coast of Gran Canaria.

Address Calle Doctor Negrín, 10
Vecindario, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, 35110
Note Often has better appointment availability than Las Palmas. Worth checking alongside the main office.
Hours Monday–Friday, 09:00–14:00 (appointment only)

Option 3 — Maspalomas: Comisaría San Bartolomé de Tirajana (south residents)

For residents of Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Meloneras, Arguineguín, and the south-west coast.

Address Avenida de Tirajana, s/n
San Bartolomé de Tirajana, 35100
Hours Monday–Friday, 09:00–14:00 (appointment only)

For Non-EU Citizens — Dedicated Extranjería Offices Only

Because your NIE appointment includes fingerprinting (huella dactilar), you must use one of the two designated Extranjería offices. Local stations are not equipped for this procedure.

Option 1 — Las Palmas: Brigada Provincial de Extranjería (main office)

Address Calle Luis Doreste Silva, 93
35004 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Transport Bus lines 1, 2, 12, 30 stop nearby. Limited street parking.
Hours Monday–Friday, 09:00–14:00 (appointment only)

Option 2 — Maspalomas: Comisaría San Bartolomé de Tirajana

For residents of the south of the island. Generally has slightly more availability than Las Palmas.

Address Avenida de Tirajana, s/n
San Bartolomé de Tirajana, 35100
Hours Monday–Friday, 09:00–14:00 (appointment only)

TIP: Appointments in Las Palmas fill extremely quickly. EU citizens: check all three offices in the cita previa system simultaneously for the earliest slot. Non-EU citizens: compare Las Palmas and Maspalomas — the south office often has more availability.

Documents You Will Need

Bring originals AND at least two photocopies of every document. Officers sometimes ask for extras, and it is far better to have too many than to be turned away.

For ALL applicants (EU and non-EU):

  • Valid passport — original + 2 photocopies of the photo page and any stamped pages
  • Completed EX-15 form — the NIE application form (download free from extranjeria.gob.es)
  • Completed Modelo 790 Código 012 — the tax form used to pay the NIE fee
  • Proof of fee payment — approximately €9.84 (2026 rate). Pay at any Spanish bank branch or via some online banking apps before your appointment
  • Proof of reason for NIE — why you need the number (see below)

Proof of reason — what to bring:

You must demonstrate a legitimate reason for needing an NIE. Common options include:

  • Buying property: notarial contract (contrato de arras) or nota simple from the Land Registry
  • Employment: signed job offer or work contract
  • Self-employment: certificate of intention to register as autónomo, or a freelance contract
  • Study: enrolment confirmation from a Spanish educational institution
  • Any economic, professional, or social reason is generally accepted — if in doubt, bring any official document showing your link to Spain

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens — additional document:

EU citizens can (and should) request their EU Registration Certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la UE) at the same appointment. This replaces the need for a TIE card and confirms your right to reside in Spain. Bring one extra passport photo for this.

Non-EU citizens (UK, US, AUS, CAN etc.) — additional documents:

  • your valid visa (long-stay visa holders already have a NIE — see the note above) or visa approval letter (if applicable)
  • 2 passport-sized photographs (for the TIE card application, which follows separately)

Note: non-EU citizens get the NIE number first, then apply separately for the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) residency card within 30 days of arrival. See our guide: TIE vs NIE — What’s the Difference?

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for Your NIE in Gran Canaria

Step 1 — Download and complete the EX-15 form

Download the EX-15 form from the official Spanish government website (extranjeria.gob.es). Fill it in digitally before printing — handwritten forms are harder to read and may cause delays. Use your passport details exactly as they appear.

Step 2 — Pay the fee using Modelo 790 Código 012

The NIE fee in 2026 is approximately €9.84. You pay this using the Modelo 790 Código 012 tax form, which you download, fill in, and take to any Spanish bank branch to pay.

Options for paying:

  • At any Spanish bank branch: take the completed 790-012 form and pay in cash or by card. The bank stamps your receipt — this is your proof of payment.
  • Online via your Spanish bank’s app: some banks (BBVA, CaixaBank) allow online payment of Modelo 790. The payment receipt is your proof.
  • Before you have a Spanish bank account: use Wise to manage your money while you set up your account. By clicking the Expat Helper Wise link you get a free transfer on your first transaction.

TIP: You cannot pay the fee on the day of your appointment. Pay first, bring the stamped receipt.

Step 3 — Book your cita previa (appointment)

NIE appointments cannot be done as a walk-in — you must book online in advance.

  1. Go to: sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/
  2. Select province: Las Palmas
  3. Select procedure: ‘Policía – Expedición de NIE e Inclusión de Huella’ (non-EU) or ‘Policía – Certificados y Asignación de NIE’ (EU)
  4. Enter your passport number and details
  5. Choose your preferred office: Las Palmas (Luis Doreste Silva) or Maspalomas (San Bartolomé de Tirajana)
  6. Select a date and time — confirm and print or screenshot your appointment confirmation

Appointments are released on a rolling basis and can disappear within minutes. Check the system multiple times per day, particularly between 08:00–09:00 when new slots often appear. If no slots are showing, keep trying — cancellations open up regularly.

Step 4 — Attend your appointment

Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Bring your complete document pack — originals and photocopies. At the office, you will present your documents, have your fingerprints taken (non-EU applicants), and receive or be told when to collect your NIE certificate.

  • NIE is often issued the same day, or within a few days
  • You may need to return to collect the physical certificate — ask at the desk
  • EU citizens: your EU Registration Certificate may be issued at the same appointment or posted to you

Step 5 — Receive your NIE number

Your NIE is a letter followed by 7 numbers followed by a letter (e.g. X1234567Z). Keep the certificate safe — you will use this number for the rest of your life in Spain. It is printed on a small green certificate (resguardo).

What to Do Immediately After Getting Your NIE

With your NIE in hand, your next priorities are:

  1. Empadronamiento — register at your local Ayuntamiento (town hall). This is essential for healthcare, schools, and many admin tasks. See our Empadronamiento guide.
  2. Open a Spanish bank account — you can now open an account with BBVA, CaixaBank, or Sabadell. Or use Revolut (accepts Spanish residents with just your NIE) as a digital option.
  3. Non-EU: Apply for your TIE residency card within 30 days of arriving in Spain.
  4. Register with a GP at your local Centro de Salud (health centre) using your NIE and empadronamiento certificate.

EU vs Non-EU Citizens — Key Differences

EU / EEA / Swiss Citizens Non-EU Citizens (UK, US, AUS etc.)
Visa needed? No Yes — apply at Spanish consulate before travel
Form used EX-15 EX-15
Fee ~€9.84 (Modelo 790-012) ~€9.84 (Modelo 790-012)
Also receive EU Registration Certificate NIE only — TIE card applied for separately
Fingerprints? Not usually Yes

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not booking early enough — appointments can be weeks out. Book before you arrive if possible.
  • Only bringing one photocopy — bring two copies of everything.
  • Paying the fee on the day — payment must be done before your appointment. The bank-stamped receipt is required.
  • Wrong procedure selected online — EU citizens select ‘Certificados y Asignación de NIE’, non-EU select ‘Expedición de NIE e Inclusión de Huella’.
  • Assuming the NIE is the same as the TIE — the NIE is a number; the TIE is the physical residency card (non-EU only, separate application).
  • Letting your EX-15 form expire — once printed, the form should be submitted within a reasonable timeframe. Fill it out close to your appointment date.

INSIDER TIP: The online appointment system (sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es) is notoriously frustrating. If you cannot find an appointment, try checking at 08:00 sharp when new slots are often released, and again around midday when cancellations appear. Persistence pays off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my NIE at the airport?

No. NIE applications must be made at a police station with a prior appointment. There is no airport service.

Can someone else apply on my behalf?

Yes — you can grant a trusted person (or a gestor/lawyer) power of attorney (representación) to apply on your behalf. They will need a signed authorisation from you, your passport copy, and all other required documents.

How long does it take to get the NIE?

Once at your appointment, the NIE number is usually assigned the same day. You may receive a physical certificate immediately or need to return within a few days to collect it.

Does the NIE expire?

The NIE number is permanent and never expires. However, the initial certificate (resguardo) issued to non-EU citizens before their TIE card may have a limited validity for certain official processes — always check with the relevant body.

I’m British — do I need the same process as other non-EU citizens?

Yes. Since Brexit (1 January 2021), UK citizens are treated as non-EU nationals for immigration purposes in Spain. You will need to apply for the appropriate visa before arriving (e.g. Non-Lucrative Visa, Digital Nomad Visa), then get your NIE and TIE card on arrival. See our full Non-Lucrative Visa guide for details.

What if I can’t get an appointment in Gran Canaria?

It is theoretically possible to apply at the Spanish consulate in your home country before leaving, though the process is slower and more bureaucratic. In practice, most people book a cita previa online and are persistent until a slot appears. Use a gestor if you are struggling — they often have access to slots or can navigate the system on your behalf.
